Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Polls this far out from the next election have little to say about what will happen when Canadians next cast their ballots, but a new survey from EKOS Research highlights some troubling indicators for the Conservative Party.

J.J. McCullough: Canada: Our Home and Communist Land
2012-04-27-mediabitesreal.jpgAs we may recall, a couple days ago good ol' Ezra Levant was having quite a snit over the fact that outgoing Globe and Mail web editor Stephen Wicary was emigrating to Cuba, in theory because that's where his wife works, but probably because he's a goddamn commie.
Bernie Farber: Will Bill C-31 Reject More Romas?
One of the more pernicious elements of the new Immigration and Refugee Bill C-31 is the so-called "Designated Safe Country" (DSO) rule. This would designate certain countries as "safe" more or less assuring that refugee claims from any such countries would be quickly rejected. The Romas are a prime target.
Joan Ruzsa: Crime Doesn't Deter Tories -- Nor do Facts
In a statement Wednesday, Vic Toews said the omnibus crime bill had not led to the predicted rise in prisoners and prison costs. Either the Public Safety Minister is being intentionally deceptive, or he lacks a basic understanding of how the court system works. I'm not sure which one is more disturbing. On the one hand the Conservatives are enacting legislation that will inevitably fill our already-crowded prisons to overflowing, and on the other hand they say they're not going to spend money on new prisons. These seem, at first glance, like irreconcilable positions.
Peter Worthington: Are Those Daisy Dukes Rape Bait?
The main message in so-called "Muslim cleric" and street preacher al-Haashim Kamena Atangana's tirade against provocatively-dressed women is what it says about some Muslim men. Apparently, men are such lustful creatures that they can't control themselves if they spot a short skirt. He would favor a law requiring women to wear long robes that cover all parts of skin. One wonders why people who feel this strongly bother emigrating to a country like ours, or why home-grown people convert to a religion that despises aspects of our cultural mores. In a free and orderly society, anyone should be able to dress however they want without risking assault.
Craig and Marc Kielburger: These Kids Learned About Child Rights the Hard Way
Poonam Thapa, a former sex slave in Nepal, is a jurist and educator for the World Children's Prize, a global initiative that teaches children in all parts of the world about their rights. Each year the WCP brings together a jury of 15 young people from all parts of the world. These children are experts in child rights thanks in part to training they receive, but more importantly, for many of them, because of their own life experiences as former child slaves, soldiers, refugees and street kids.
